About Pillows of Hope

We believe no one facing cancer should have to worry about where they will stay or how they will pay for it while getting the care they need.

Our mission

Pillows of Hope Foundation provides lodging for people who have to travel for cancer treatments. Many patients must travel far from home to reach specialized care, and the cost of hotels or rentals can become a heavy burden on top of medical bills and time away from work.

By helping cover lodging, we give patients and their caregivers one less thing to worry about, and a comfortable place to rest between appointments.

Our Story

It began with a post on Facebook. An old high school friend in Louisiana shared that her four-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with a rare disease. Her family made trip after trip to Houston so their little girl could get the treatment she needed. Then one day they shared the news every parent fears: their daughter had lost her fight and gone home to be with the Lord. My own oldest daughter was the same age at the time, and I couldn’t begin to imagine the grief they were carrying.

Not long after, Sonya’s sister learned she had stage 4 colon cancer. She was a mother raising five children, and her husband was the family’s only provider. On top of everything else, they had to find a way to get from Louisiana to Houston, again and again, so she could receive care.

Two families I knew were facing unimaginable circumstances, and I felt called to do something for them and for the many others walking the same road. That is how Pillows of Hope was born. We work to ease the financial burden of traveling for treatment, so patients and their families can focus on what matters most: God, family, and healing.

Our Board

The volunteers who lead Pillows of Hope Foundation.

Larry Hayes

President

Larry has spent his career in federal law enforcement serving and protecting others, and he brings that same commitment to Pillows of Hope. Larry is also a real estate investor and licensed realtor in Texas, which was the driving force behind the idea of creating a way to help provide lodging for people who had more important things to worry about than where they were going to stay or how they were going to pay for it when traveling for treatment. At home he's a proud father of two daughters, a bonus dad to two sons and two daughters, and a new "Papa" to an awesome little grandson.

Kaitlyn Pelletier

Vice President

Kaitlyn is an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner at the Geriatric Oncology Clinic at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, where she sees firsthand the toll that travel and lodging costs take on patients and their families. Kaitlyn was instrumental in the development of the Oncology Clinic when she recognized the need for patients to be able to go to a centralized location for all their treatment needs. She's also the founder and owner of Wasatch NP House Calls, bringing care directly to patients' homes. Kaitlyn is a mom of two little boys and loves the outdoors, especially the ski slopes.

Sonya Hayes

Secretary

Sonya is the owner of Sonya Hayes Licensed Massage Therapy, where she has built a practice centered on comfort, healing and care for the whole person. She brings that same spirit to the foundation's work. She's a mom of two sons and two daughters and a bonus mom to two more daughters, and family is at the heart of everything she does.

Sam Pelletier

Treasurer

Sam is the Chief Financial Officer of Red Cat, bringing senior financial leadership and careful stewardship to the foundation's finances, so every donated dollar goes as far as possible. He's a dad of two little boys and an avid backcountry skier who's happiest in the mountains.
